What are the common epidemic diseases in rabbits

No matter what kind of pets are kept, disease issues are our top concern. Serious diseases will not only threaten the life of rabbits, but also cause great economic losses to us. In the past, some infectious diseases were more worrying, but now there are corresponding vaccines for many diseases, so they can be better prevented. However, intestinal diseases, respiratory diseases, and skin fungal diseases are always the types of diseases that are easy to appear.

  1. Intestinal diseases

The symptoms of intestinal diseases usually include diarrhea, watery diarrhea, constipation, bloating and so on. The morbidity and mortality are relatively high, especially in young rabbits. Intestinal diseases can be roughly divided into colibacillosis, Clostridium weleriosis, salmonellosis, Taize’s disease and Klebsiosis, as well as those caused by stress factors and so on. The occurrence of these diseases is mainly epidemic, and sporadic is secondary. The root cause is actually closely related to feeding and management. Most of them are caused by poor environmental sanitation, ineffective disinfection measures, and unclean feed, especially the latter. But in the final analysis, most of these diseases are diseases that come from the mouth. Therefore, if the quality control of rabbit feed starts from the source of raw materials, it can achieve twice the result with half the effort and effectively reduce the occurrence of diseases.

Colibacillosis is the most common intestinal infectious disease. Although the vaccine has a good preventive effect, due to the large number of bacterial antigen types, several strains of pathogenic E. coli with different antigen types may be isolated even in a rabbit farm. In the treatment of intestinal diseases, fluoroquinolones and colistin should be the first choice. Practice has proved that the three principles of early detection and early treatment, adequate dose of drugs, and maintenance of short-term medication after effect should be emphasized. As for Clostridium perfringens, rabbits are mainly killed by bacterial toxins, so it is difficult to treat with antibiotics alone.

  1. Respiratory diseases

This type of disease is almost impossible to eradicate. The main ones are Pasteurellosis multocida and Bordetella bronchiseptica. The status of the two in rabbit respiratory diseases in various places is different, and they are indistinguishable, and they are often concurrent. The typical symptoms are rhinitis, often secondary to pleuropneumonia and pus in the pleural cavity, leading to the death of rabbits, and the disease is high in winter and spring.

Although there is a corresponding vaccine for rabbit pasteurellosis, the protection rate of the vaccine is not particularly high. However, the vaccine is still recommended to at least reduce the death of rabbits due to lung infection.

  1. Dermatophyte diseases of rabbits

The disease spreads rapidly, and although it will not directly kill the rabbit, it is very harmful to the rabbit. The incidence rate of young rabbits in infected rabbit farms can be as high as 93.1%, which shows that the disease is relatively contagious. And the disease can be transmitted to breeders, especially children. For the prevention and treatment of this disease, the more commonly used method is to add 75% griseofulvin to the feed with 250g per ton of feed, and feed it continuously for 3-4 weeks. Acesal iodine solution or 5%-10% concentrated iodine tincture and external application of ciclopirox amine ointment are also available, but they are time-consuming and labor-intensive, and are only suitable for sporadic rabbits. The special drugs for this disease are terbinafine and amorolfine, both of which can be used for oral administration, but the price is slightly more expensive.
